Lisa Kowarski, M.P.H., joined Statistics Collaborative, Inc. (StatCollab) in 2012. She is a member of the Society for Clinical Trials.
Ms. Kowarski’s first position at StatCollab was as a Research Assistant, providing support to project teams on clinical trials in a range of disease areas. As she gained experience, Ms. Kowarski took on a larger coordination role on her projects, learned SAS programming in order to develop and validate datasets and presentations, and pursued her graduate degree.
As a Biostatistician, Ms. Kowarski has continued to contribute to clinical trials in a number of therapeutic areas. She programs datasets and statistical analyses, validates SAS program code, and writes general-use SAS macros to make programming more efficient for her project teams. Ms. Kowarski has served as the project manager and independent reporting statistician to DMCs overseeing trials evaluating treatments for systemic lupus erythematosus, lupus nephritis, multiple sclerosis, HIV control, Huntington’s disease, multiple ocular diseases (age‑related macular degeneration, diabetic macular edema, retinal vein occlusion, nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy), myocardial infarction, and pediatric patients at risk for thrombotic disorders. In this role, Ms. Kowarski leads the generation of interim reports, drafts analysis plans and charters, presents reports to DMCs and Sponsors, manages teams of programming and research staff, acts as the main point-of-contact for clients and DMC members, and manages project budgets.
Ms. Kowarski has also served as a consulting statistician and programmer for clients investigating therapies or vaccines for a range of diseases and served as lead statistical programmer for a final analysis of a trial investigating a therapy for a neurodegenerative disease. As a consulting statistician and programmer, she has calculated sample size and power, drafted or reviewed statistical analysis plans and statistical sections of protocols, and assisted planing and executing post-hoc exploratory analyses. As lead statistical programmer for a final analysis, she produced and validated CDISC-compliant ADaM datasets and documentation, acted as the main point-of-contact for issues related to data and programming, and assisted drafting the statistical analysis plan and statistical reports.
In addition to her work as a Biostatistician, Ms. Kowarski supervises junior staff members, provides training sessions to new project managers, and developed a project management training module on project team leadership. Ms. Kowarski also formerly served on StatCollab’s contracts team from 2012–2019. She wrote proposals and developed budgets for new work, negotiated contractual terms, and was one of the initial points-of-contact for potential clients.
Ms. Kowarski received her B.A. magna cum laude in Psychology from Colgate University (2012) and her M.P.H. in Epidemiology from The George Washington University (2017). Her culminating experience research project for her M.P.H. was titled “Past-year painkiller dependence and history of injection drug use among US adults.”
