Lisa Kowarski, M.P.H., joined Statistics Collaborative, Inc. (SCI) in 2012. She is a member of the Society for Clinical Trials.
Ms. Kowarski’s first position at SCI was as a Research Assistant, providing support to project teams on clinical trials in a range of areas, including treatments for Alzheimer’s disease, hyperkalemia, T-cell lymphoma, systemic lupus erythematosus, lupus nephritis, vasculitis, breast cancer, and a rare metabolic disease. She assisted project managers in preparing safety monitoring reports for Data Monitoring Committees (DMCs), designing table and figure shells, drafting DMC Charters and meeting minutes, and managing communications with DMC members and sponsor teams. As she gained experience, Ms. Kowarski took on a larger coordination role on her projects, learned SAS programming in order to develop and validate datasets and presentations, and pursued her graduate degree.
As a Biostatistician, Ms. Kowarski has continued to contribute to clinical trials in a number of therapeutic areas. She programs datasets and statistical analyses, validates SAS program code, and writes and reviews study reports, analysis plans, and charters for Data Monitoring Committees (DMCs). Ms. Kowarski has served as the project manager and reporting statistician for trials evaluating treatments for acute heart failure, myocardial infarction, systemic lupus erythematosus, lupus nephritis, HIV control, Huntington’s disease, and pediatric patients at risk for thrombotic disorders. In this role, Ms. Kowarski has served as the independent reporting statistician to DMCs, managed teams of programming and research staff, acted as the main point-of-contact for clients and DMC members, and managed project budgets. She has also drafted or reviewed final statistical analysis plans for trials evaluating treatments for T‑cell lymphoma and hepatitis D and a vaccine against an addictive substance. She supervises junior staff members, providing them with mentorship, training, and opportunities for professional growth.
Ms. Kowarski also formerly served on SCI’s contracts team from 2012–2019. She wrote proposals and developed budgets for new work, negotiated contractual terms, and was one of the initial points-of-contact for potential clients.
Ms. Kowarski received her B.A. magna cum laude in Psychology from Colgate University (2012) and her M.P.H. in Epidemiology from The George Washington University (2017). Her culminating experience research project for her M.P.H. was titled “Past-year painkiller dependence and history of injection drug use among US adults.”
